We don't know if you're feeling flush with profit right now, but Forbes has put together a slideshow of the 20 most profitable small businesses, and veterinarians are No. 17, tied with diagnostic imaging centers.
The magazine gathered financial information for more than 300,000 companies with the help of North Carolina-based research firm Sageworks. Veterinarians, with a 10.5 percent pretax margin, ran ahead of wired telecommunication carriers, support activities for oil and gas operations, and family-practice human-medicine doctors.
However, other human-medicine doctors handily beat veterinarians' profits. Physical, occupational, speech, and audio specialists (No. 15), regular physicians (No. 12), optometrists (No. 9), surgical and emergency centers (No. 7), and dentists (No. 4) all surpassed veterinary hospitals.
Who was number one? Certified public accountants. Hey, it's never too late to drop the stethoscope and try out the calculator. (We know, we know—you'd never.)
