President George W. Bush has signed into law The Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act (S. 3880). The law increases jail time and
penalties for those who damage or threaten "animal industry" businesses, and widens that label to include individuals as well
as businesses—everything from biomedical research facilities and veterinary hospitals to pet stores and rodeos. Proponents
say it rightfully punishes animal-rights advocates who harass individuals and damage businesses. Opponents say the new law
limits free speech by punishing peaceful protesters who also may harm a business's bottom line.
