The July launch of Pet Airways—an exclusive pet airline—may have traditional air carriers reconsidering catering toward pet owners. Case in point: American Airlines recently opened Pet Relief Area, a final pit stop for passengers and their pets, at the John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York. Conveniently located on the departure level, the 30- by 50-foot enclosure with a 1,000-square-foot patch of natural grass features park benches, trash barrels, and a bright red fire hydrant. The relief area is the first of it’s caliber, but likely not to be the last.
