Help clients say goodbye

Sympathy cards show grieving clients you care.

It's difficult to put into words how much pets mean to their human counterparts. That's why there's really no perfect, all-encompassing statement to put into a sympathy card, says Sheila Grosdidier, RVT, consultant with VMC Inc. in Evergreen, Colo. Try using a few encouraging words, like "Don't cry because it's over; smile because it happened. We celebrate all the wonderful memories you have of (pet's name). And while there is little we can say, our thoughts are with you at this difficult time."

Some clinics go the extra mile and include a picture of the pet from the practice's veterinary software program, or even a clay paw print and hair clipping. Whatever you decide to do, keep in mind that the most important way you can commemorate a client's loss is showing him or her that you care.
